Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One tonight and EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis remains a frontrunner for the Glitterball Trophy. She has remained consistent throughout the 2021 series but sat in the middle of the leaderboard after her recent Paso Doble. Professional dancer Gary Edwards said the actress could be in trouble if she does not up her game this week.

Strictly fans are one step closer to finding out who will make the final of the 2021 series as the quarter-final takes place this weekend.

Rose Ayling-Ellis and her partner Giovanni Pernice remain favourites to lift the Glitterball Trophy.

However, there are couples hot on their heels, including Bake Off star John Whaite and his partner Johannes Radebe.

Rose impressed the judges with her characterisation during her fiery Paso Doble last week.

However, she received a score of 33, leaving her in the middle of the leaderboard.

Professional dancer and judge, Gary Edwards, said her latest performance was somewhat disappointing.

The Dancing With The Stars expert said: “Style and character was stunning, look and attitude, excellent timing.

“But I totally disagreed with Shirley [Ballas], I thought her shaping was very, very bad.

“Tom [Fletcher’s] Paso was way better all those weeks ago, This was definitely not my favourite.

“I gave it an eight, it was very stompy. It was not one of the best of the night and it was one of her worst, but she looked stunning.”

The pro dancer agreed with Rose’s position on the leaderboard, saying: “I didn’t have Rose very high because it just didn’t do it for me at all really.”

Based on scores alone, Rose could find herself in the bottom two this weekend if she achieves a similar total.

However, the results also depend heavily on the public vote, and the EastEnders star has a huge following behind her.

Commenting on who he thinks could face the dreaded dance-off this week, Gary said: “I would say Rhys [Stephenson].

“I think for dancing it should absolutely not be Rhys, but with him being in the bottom so many times I think he will be in the bottom.

“I think he will be the one to send Dan [Walker] home, but if you look at my scores it’s actually Rose.

“[The Paso] was one of Rose’s worst dances for me, but is she going to do that again next week? I doubt it.

“I see them bouncing back. I see Rhys and Dan in the dance-off and I think Dan is going home.”

Tonight Rose and Giovanni will be dancing the American Smooth to This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole.

Rose is on Instagram and she thanked fans who voted to save her following her Paso Doble last week.

She said: “Thank you so much to everyone who voted and supported us. We really appreciate it.

“I am feeling very lucky and grateful to be here. @pernicegiovann1 you are the best, thank you. I cannot wait to dance for next week!”

Her partner Giovanni praised her for reaching the quarter-finals, and he said: “@rose.a.e and I feel very privileged to be able to perform one more week for you!! We are still standing.”

Strictly Come Dancing airs tonight on BBC One at 6.40pm.
