Mare of Easttown is a winner for HBO Max. The finale episode, which gave fans answers on who killed Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny), is now the most-watched episode of any HBO original series on HBO Max, according to recently released ratings. The crime drama’s a miniseries. However, given the finale’s ratings, Kate Winslet and the rest of the cast just might return for Mare of Easttown Season 2.

After nearly two months of fans tuning in to see what happened next for the residents of Easttown, Pennsylvania, everything came to a close on May 30, 2021. The Mare of Easttown finale aired on HBO and HBO Max as viewers watched Mare Sheehan (Winslet) arrest her best friend’s husband, John (Joe Tippett), for killing Erin.
As the episode went on, Mare of Easttown fan theories were put to the test. Did John really kill the young mother? Or was it his brother, Billy (Robbie Tann)? Things didn’t add up to Mare.
After a conversation with someone in town, the detective realized John’s teenage son, Ryan (Cameron Mann), was responsible for killing Erin. When questioned by police, the 13-year-old explained he and Erin had wrestled over a loaded gun and it accidentally went off.
The episode ended with life continuing on in Easttown. Lori (Julianne Nicholson) raised John and Erin’s baby as her own. Mare’s daughter went off to college. In the final few moments, Mare comforted Lori (Julianne Nicholson) and faced her own feelings about the death of her son Kevin.
The ‘Mare of Easttown’ finale brought in 4 million viewers Memorial Day weekend
According to TV ratings released by Variety in the days following the Mare of Easttown finale, it brought in four million viewers during Memorial Day weekend. Almost three million tuned in to watch the seventh episode, “Sacrament,” on Sunday night when the finale dropped on all HBO platforms.
Those figures mean the Mare of Easttown finale set a record as the most-watched episode of any HBO original series on HBO Max within its first 24 hours of streaming. They also put Mare of Easttown ahead of two other popular HBO shows, The Undoing starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and The Flight Attendant starring Kaley Cuoco.
Not only that but Mare of Easttown became more and more popular as the weeks went on making it one of only two HBO shows to gain a bigger audience with each episode.
HBO has yet to confirm whether or not ‘Mare of Easttown’ Season 2 will happen but Kate Winslet’s on board
Mare of Easttown had barely started when fans began to wonder about the future of the show. Will Mare of Easttown Season 2 happen? At the time of publication, it’s unclear. The show was written as a miniseries or limited series meaning the seventh episode was meant to be its last.
However, given its popularity and the finale’s impressive ratings there’s certainly the possibility it could move forward. HBO hasn’t confirmed or denied season 2 but it’s only been days since the finale began streaming. Meanwhile, Winslet’s up for a second season. She told TV Line she “would love” to return and reprise her role. Showrunner Craig Zobel and creator Brad Ingelsby have also shared they are open to the idea of a second season.
