Luke's mum Sue is dying in Hollyoaks as she returns in tragic storyline

Sue Morgan (Marian McLoughlin) returned to her old stomping ground in tonight’s (May 3) visit to Hollyoaks, but she brought with her a huge secret – one which ultimately came out just before the credits rolled.

The character – previously portrayed by Eva White – made her first appearance in nearly 20 years, setting foot back in the eponymous village in the hopes of righting her wrongs.

Viewers will know that the relationship Luke (Gary Lucy) has with his mum isn’t a good one, and the two have been estranged for a number of years.

As a result, you can imagine how surprised he was when he received a call from Mandy Richardson (Sarah Jayne Dunn) to tell him of Sue’s unannounced arrival.

Luke stormed around to his house to have it out with his mum – berating her for staying away when they needed her the most, making reference to Ollie’s (Gabriel Clark) abuse, and the birth of DJ.

Sue apologised for her absence, claiming that she didn’t feel the time was right to get in touch given all the years they were out of each other’s lives.

She was determined to make amends, however, and even hoped to treat her son to dinner – but Luke refused to attend.

Sue therefore decided to drop the act and come clean about the real reason she returned: she’s dying.

The former mainstay then burst into tears, leaving Luke struggling to process the information he’d just learned.

Will he be able to forgive his mum before it’s too late?

Hollyoaks continues Tuesday May 4 at 7pm on E4.
