Grey’s Anatomy fans were pleased to hear season 18 would be airing on ABC on September 30. At the start of the month, they had another surprise when actress Kate Walsh announced her character would return for the latest outing. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about when she will be back.

When will Kate Walsh return to Grey’s Anatomy?

On September 2, 2021, the official Facebook page for Grey’s Anatomy shared an exciting video with fans.

The video shows Kate Walsh as she says: “Well, well, would you look who it is. That’s right my loves, Dr Addison Montgomery is coming back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

“And I’m so excited to be home again, joining Shonda [Rhimes], Ellen [Pompeo] and the rest of the incredible cast.

“This season – just wait until you see what she has in store for you. The new season premiere is September 30 on ABC.”

She is due to appear in multiple episodes of the new outing as a gynaecological and neonatal surgeon.

During her first run in the series, she was married to Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey) and shared a deep history with Meredith Grey.

Her first appearance was in the season one finale as Derek’s estranged wife and she became a series regular.

She left the show after season three as creator Rhimes made a spinoff called Private Practice, centred around her character.

Addison moved to LA for a fresh start, meaning her character said goodbye to colleagues at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Walsh went on to lead the spinoff series for six seasons, but she did appear a couple of times as a guest in Grey’s.

She most recently starred in season eight and fans are thrilled to see her character return.

They have been hoping she will appear in more than one episode, and the good news is, this is very likely.

She is expected to be a recurring character, but an exact date for her return has not yet been announced.

Fans took to Walsh’s video to share their thoughts, with one saying: “I’m glad she’s back. I want her to take Jo under her wing as an OBGYN as well as train her in pediatric/fetal surgery.”

Another said: “Finally! Some good news!! Ever since Jo decided to switch to OB, I was hoping that Addison would come back and be her teacher!!”

A specific storyline for Walsh’s character has not yet been revealed but this prediction from fans is entirely feasible.

Another viewer said: “OMG, this is such exciting news! I was literally thinking to myself a few days ago, as I’m binging Grey’s for the millionth time, will we ever see Addison again? I really hope it’s for more than one episode.”

Private Practice came to an end in 2013 and since then, the star went on to feature in Full Circle, Fargo and Bad Judge.

She also had a main role in 13 Reasons Why as Olivia Baker and played The Handler in The Umbrella Academy.

One of her most recent TV roles was in Emily in Paris, as the recurring character Madeline Wheeler.

Fans continued to express their excitement over her return to Grey’s on social media.

One said: “Omg yesss!!! I’m so excited I loved her on both series and I pray that they did not screw with her marriage to Jake and she Jake and Henry are one big happy family.”

Another added: “Omg! Omg! Omg! I love Addison! I have never missed an episode of greys and I DEFINITELY will not be missing this one!”

The 53-year-old actress is from California and she was married to 20th Century Fox executive Alex Young from 2007 until 2010.
