Liam (played by Johnny McPherson) is currently unaware his wife, Leyla (Roxy Shahidi), has developed a concerning drug habit as she has turned to cocaine in light of the events from the past 12 months. The doctor believes Emmerdale newcomer, Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough), has been a great influence in bringing his spouse’s spark back, not realising she has been feeding her partying lifestyle. However, secrets don’t stay hidden for long on the ITV soap and when the truth comes out, it seems there are going to be some life-changing consequences.

The doctor has suffered a lot in recent times, having been dealing with the grief he suffered from the loss of his daughter, Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger).

Around the same time, Leyla suffered a miscarriage, adding yet more heartache to the storyline and earlier this year, he discovered it was Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) who murdered his child.

When the villain ended up shooting Leyla, Liam was convinced he was going to lose her as well and so ended up throwing Meena off a bridge.

She survived and was sent to prison but on the day of her sentencing, Meena held Liam and various other characters hostage.

Just as he thought he was going to turn over a new leaf, he is going to discover Leyla has been taking drugs as a way of having a buzz when she is around him.

This is going to hurt Liam to the core as he will feel every time Leyla has been around him, it’s not her who has been speaking but the drugs instead.

Feeling as if their relationship has been fake for some time, Liam could tell Leyla he needs some distance from her to get his head around the discovery.

He would also tell his wife she needs to seek help for her drug problem and if she doesn’t this is going to end them.

Although she could try to stop taking cocaine, Leyla could find herself slipping into her old ways almost immediately as the heartache of her break from Liam could cause her to seek comfort from her demons.

Knowing his wife cannot change her ways, Liam could tell Leyla he is going to leave the village and start a new chapter of his life elsewhere.

Huge ramifications for Liam

Laura Shaw

Being an expert doctor in his field, he could be offered a job in America and knowing his wife has her life in the village, he was willing to turn it down.

However, with the offer coming at the same time as discovering Leyla has been taking drugs, he could contact the employers and tell them he has changed his mind.

Leyla would do everything in her power to try and make him stay but her need for cocaine could be too strong for her to give up.

By the time he gets to America, Liam could have filed for divorce, leaving Leyla even more heartbroken and she would have no one to turn to.

Suzy could have turned her back on her at this point and so could Leyla’s son, Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant).

Will everyone leaving her and divorcing Liam make Leyla sit up and really think hard about the way she has been acting?

Teasing the future of this storyline, producer Laura Shaw said there will be consequences to Leyla’s drug habit taking over her life.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media, the soap boss explained: “Leyla’s got a huge storyline coming up where a shocking secret is revealed.

“And this will have huge ramifications for Liam and Jacob in particular.

“Some of our most-loved couples will have stories that will see how they navigate through their problems as strong family units.”

Laura added: “I think the stories running through the summer are very much about strengthening some of our couples and seeing them fight for what they love.

“As well as maybe pushing one or two others to breaking point,” she continued, so could she have been hinting at the end of Liam and Leyla?

The pair got together around Christmas time in 2019 and at first, they tried to keep their romance a secret from their loved ones.

Later this year, it will be three years since they got together and although they’ve not been together too long, they have become firm favourites with the fans.

Taking to Twitter, viewers have been sharing their thoughts on the couple’s latest storyline which could see them break up.

Mike posted on the social media platform: “Liam only if you knew what Leyla and her new mate are actually doing #Emmerdale.”

Ryan added: “Leyla thinks the drugs will help her after supporting Liam. Taking drugs isn’t the answer Leyla #Emmerdale.”

Grianne shared: “So Leanna’s death is supposedly Leyla’s initial reason for taking to drugs so what’s her excuse now? Boredom with ordinary, everyday life with Liam maybe? #Emmerdale.”

Matthew wrote: “Leyla and the latest drugs storyline is back again. Heaven help her when both Jacob and Liam discover what’s going on! #Emmerdale.”

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV, with an hour-long episode airing on Thursdays.
