Ordering food deliveries online is a convenient way for shoppers to get their groceries. Tesco has announced plans to trial a new delivery service that will fulfil orders in just 30 minutes.
During the coronavirus lockdown, Britons were urged to stay at home as much as possible.
This caused more customers to look online for their weekly shop.
While supermarket social distancing measures have relaxed, lots of customers across the country have been converted to online shopping.
Tesco has been updating its delivery services to keep up with the growing demand.
It has now revealed a trial that will use new technology to deliver food and drink items.
The supermarket giant will use drones to send out small shopping orders.
The trial will begin next month and last for six months, taking place at a single store in Ireland.
If it is a success, the delivery method could be rolled out in Tesco stores across the country.
How does it work?
Tesco has paired with start-up Manna Drone Delivery for the trial.
The new service focuses on those who order essential products and odd items.
For example, shoppers will be able to quickly order single ingredients they may have forgotten when cooking.
The fast delivery service will see products delivered on the same day and possibly within half an hour of ordering.
Tesco CEO Dave Lewis commented: “Manna have already proven the capability, the question is how we take that capability and apply it to Tesco.
“That’s the detail that’s been worked on now before we get to the trial.”
Tesco innovation director Claire Lorains added: “We’re really interested to see how drones could be part of the solution to deliver to our customers on-demand small baskets.
“If our trial with Manna is successful, we really think there is an opportunity to reach many customers through our stores extending with a drone service.”
Tesco already offers same-day delivery for customers who order before 1pm, provided there is a slot available.
If there is space, groceries will be delivered after 7pm on the same day.
