Mystery behind Carole Baskin’s missing husband set to be focus of new documentary following Tiger King success

The story of what happened to Carole Baskin's husband has been on every person lips following the storming success of Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

Released at the end of March, Netflix viewers in self-isolation due to the spread of coronavirus quickly consumed the seven-part series following the chaotic world of petting zoo owner Joe Exotic and his beloved cats.

As well as Joe, we’re introduced to several other big characters who narrate the true story including animal activist Carole Baskin, who is Joe's sworn enemy and who he ended up in prison for attempting to hire a hitman to kill her.

But it's not Carole's beef with Joe that Tiger King fans were concerned with, it was the unsolved mystery of her missing millionaire husband Jack 'Don' Lewis.

An unofficial spin-off documentary, not linked with the Netflix show, is set to air that will hopefully give us some answers to our burning questions.

According to EW American crime documentary channel Investigation Discovery (ID) have "exclusive footage" that they are hoping to air.

In a statement released by ID they said of the show, which is currently titled Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, they said: "Love her or hate her, Carole is now in the centre ring of the big cat circus.

"Is she a selfless crusader and protector of animals, who found unimaginable strength despite the mysterious disappearance of her husband? Or are we witnessing Carole Baskin’s master plan finally take effect?

"Despite her claims of innocence, did she orchestrate the disappearance of Don Lewis to seize control of his fortune, consolidate power and lay waste to her foes? No one seems to be talking – except for one man – and that man is the centre of ID’s upcoming investigative series."

Following the release of the series the wild cat enthusiast took to her Big Cat Rescue blog to refute the insinuation that she may have killed her husband.

Carole, who labelled the claims as “the most ludicrous of all the lies,” went on to say: “When the directors of the Netflix documentary Tiger King came to us five years ago they said they wanted to make the big cat version of Blackfish (the documentary that exposed abuse at SeaWorld) that would expose the misery caused by the rampant breeding of big cat cubs for cub petting exploitation and the awful life the cats lead in roadside zoos and back yards if they survive.

“There are not words for how disappointing it is to see that the series not only does not do any of that, but has had the sole goal of being as salacious and sensational as possible to draw viewers.”

In Tiger King an episode is dedicated to the story behind the disappearance of Don after Joe Exotic repeatedly suggested that Carole was behind it so that she could inherit his millions.

He vanished without a trace in August 1997, in the series footage of a weeping Carole is shown of her talking about where he could have gone.

His missing persons case is reportedly still open in Florida and the police asked for more information following the release of Tiger King, but as stated in the series after five years of him missing Carole declared him officially dead.
