The MetroCentre has re-opened to shoppers looking to buy new clothes or home accessories for the first time in 2021. But there are still strict social-distancing guides in place for anyone hoping to go shopping this week.

The UK has officially entered into the next phase of Covid restrictions being lifted.

Coronavirus cases have fallen significantly enough to move into Step 2 of the roadmap, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed earlier this month.

It means that outdoor pubs, gyms, hairdressers, and non-essential shops can re-open for the first time since January.

The Gateshead MetroCentre has also confirmed that it’ll be opening its doors once again to the public.

MetroCentre remained open throughout the England-wide lockdown over the past few months.

The shopping mall contains a number of essential stores that were able to stay open, including Wilko, Poundland, and Marks and Spencer.

But, the entire MetroCentre has now re-opened, with some cafes and restaurants trading for takeaway service.

Seeing as the entire mall is indoors, shoppers will only be able to visit with their own household or support bubble, however.

From April 12, the MetroCentre will be remaining open until 9pm on Monday to Friday.

Stores will be closing slightly earlier on the weekends, however, with a 5pm shut down on Sundays.

Each store may have reduced or extended hours, however, and it’s definitely worth checking the MetroCentre store directory before setting off.

While you’re shopping in the stores, all customers are being reminded to adhere to the strict two metre social distancing rules.

The MetroCentre website said: “Following the latest Government guidance, we can confirm that from Monday 12th April, Metrocentre will be open for non-essential shopping, and some cafes and restaurants open for delivery or takeaway only.

“As we are an indoor shopping centre, please only visit the centre with people you live with or are in a support bubble with.

“To keep everyone safe, visitors must also wear a face-covering when in the centre unless exempt, keep to the left, adhere to two metres social distance.

“Our teams have been briefed on the new guidance and we’ll be reminding everyone to keep a safe distance.”
