‘I went to see my GP to stop smoking and found out I had prostate cancer’

Back in July 2017, Martin Adams was standing on the oche in a high-profile darts competition in Blackpool and tried to steady himself.

Throwing for a match can always lead to a few nerves, said Martin – he’d experienced this first hand throughout his career. But it wasn’t his nerves that were throwing him off the game that day, it was a hot flush.

He said: “In darts, to win a leg, you need to throw a double, the outer rim of the board, and it’s always a tense time. As I stood with my eyes on the double, I could feel the heat rising, gradually taking over my body and my focus. I took a step back and regrouped, but inevitably I missed and lost the match.”

This wasn’t the first time Martin had experienced a hot flush, nor would it be his last, as this is a common side effect of hormone treatment for prostate cancer.

Martin said: “It all started in 2016 when I went to see my GP for advice to stop smoking and he suggested it would be good to do a full range of blood tests. I thought nothing of it and agreed.

“About three or four days later I received the test results and was told that my prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was raised.

“Now, at this stage, prostate cancer was not on my radar. I hadn’t heard of the disease at all, nor did I have any idea what a PSA was let alone what a raised level could mean. I spent a lot of time after that researching the disease and after further discussions with my GP, he suggested there was the potential for prostate cancer, and I was then referred to the Urology Department at Peterborough Hospital.”

There, Martin was advised a PSA level of 22 (which was his result) indicated that there could be cancer in the prostate, but he’d need further tests and scans to define that for certain.

He said: “I’m not someone who sits and dwells on things. My immediate response was if there’s something broken, then how do we fix it.

“An MRI scan showed that there was cancer in the prostate, and though my initial biopsy came back negative for cancer cells, the consultant was adamant that it didn’t look good. He believed that the cancer was in a position that was hard to reach, and so recommended a second biopsy. I respected that process, and I’m glad I did go back, as this time around it revealed a cancer cell. And for anyone who knows cancer, one is enough.

“The only good news to come out of all this poking and prodding was that the cancer had not spread to the bones. A huge relief.”

A decision had to be made about Martin’s treatment, of which there are a handful of options for people with prostate cancer.

He said: “You can watch and wait, which is keeping an eye on the cancer over the long term, and avoiding treatment unless you get symptoms. But for me, it came down to either removing my prostate or radiotherapy and hormone treatment. After talking things through with my partner, I opted for the latter.”

Martin started on hormone therapy to slow down and stop the growth of cancer cells.

He was aware there could be side effects, and that’s when he started to experience new and unusual sensations like being emotional, overtired, and of course, hot flushes.

Martin said: “While they mainly happened at night-time, I’d occasionally experience them out in public. But the worst one happened that day in Blackpool.

“Then around six months after my hormone therapy had begun, over the course of five weeks across August and September 2017 I had 20 sessions of radiotherapy, one a day Monday to Friday with the weekend off. I was there and back in an hour. I am pleased to say it did not cause me any problems and I was able to continue my everyday life, playing in competitions and exhibitions.

“Even though I didn’t win the match in Blackpool, something good did come of my trip. That weekend I met a wonderful lady named Tracy Fletcher, for the first time.

“Like me, her husband had been diagnosed with prostate cancer by chance. They had been watching Jeff Stelling on Sky Sports and googled the badge – a small male figure – he was wearing. After learning about its connection to the charity, Prostate Cancer UK, Tracy’s husband found out more about the condition and soon realised he might have it.

“Sadly, like me, he did. But his journey inspired Tracy to start selling Prostate Cancer UK badges at darts events. And that was how we met.”

Martin wanted to support and make other men aware of prostate cancer. Considering his profile, he asked how he could help.

He said: “It started with autographs and photos and soon we were selling Team Darts shirts with all funds going directly to Prostate Cancer UK. It felt good to be giving back and raising awareness all at once. Her fundraising has gone from strength to strength ever since and she’s raised more than £450,000 now, which is amazing.”

In September 2017, Martin’s radiotherapy ended and test results showed the treatment had worked.

He said: “I stopped all treatment in 2018 and now see my GP twice a year to keep my PSA levels in check. My last reading was just 0.04, which is pretty low.

“Its at this time of the year the sporting world focuses on the great sport of darts, and as a three-time former BDO World Champion, I’m so happy to see that Prostate Cancer UK has been named as a charity partner at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.”

The charity’s ‘the Big’ 180 campaign sees Paddy Power donate £1,000 to the charity for every 180 scored by players. In addition, the campaign challenges 180,000 fans in the UK to use Prostate Cancer UK’s online risk checker.

Martin said: “While that risk checker didn’t exist before my diagnosis, I now know prostate cancer is curable if caught early, but early-stage prostate cancer often has no symptoms, so it is vital that men know their risk.

“Men are at higher risk if they are over 50, Black or have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer.

“I’d urge men reading this to spend just 30 seconds completing the risk checker. I certainly would have if it was around when I started my journey.”

KHLOE Kardashian has headed back to the gym for another workout.

The Hulu personality is well-known for sharing her fitness routines on social media.

On Wednesday, Khloe, 39, shared a Boomerang on her Instagram Stories during her daily workout in the TV star's gym at her $17million Los Angeles mansion.

The Good American co-founder stood in front of a floor-length mirror that showcased tons of workout equipment including treadmills and stairmasters.

Khloe stood in the middle and revealed most of her face as the other half was hidden behind her Apple iPhone.

She wore an all-black activewear ensemble which included a tiny sports bra and skintight leggings – which were see-through.

To protect her feet, she wore a pair of matching black and white sneakers.

The mom of two left her long dirty blonde hair down and in front of her shoulders.

"Let's get it," she captioned her post while wiggling her hips.

Last week, Khloe brought fans into her gym once again while with her bestie, Malika Haqq, 40.

Over the weekend, Malika, Khloe, and her friend's three-year-old son, Ace, spent time working out together – but had to take a selfie first.

In it, the ladies posed in the mirror – Khloe donning tight black leggings, a matching sports bra, high white socks, and white sneakers, while Malika rocked green leggings and sports bra, and white sneakers.

In front of the two moms, Ace was distracted by a white product that he held in his hands.

The tiny tot wore a gray jumpsuit with his hair braided.

SHOWING OFF

Last week, Khloe continued to show off her toned figure in skintight activewear.

She shared with her 311million Instagram followers an exercise machine that she loved to incorporate into her workout routine.

On Friday, Khloe promoted an indoor rowing machine from the brand Hydro.

The Kardashians star was all smiles as she sat on the heavy machinery as it was stationed in her home's living room.

Behind the beauty mogul was a large snow-covered Christmas tree that had yet to be decorated.

Khloe was dressed for exercise, sporting an olive green tank top, matching leggings, and white sneakers.

A WOMAN has been left with life-long scars after her hot water bottle EXPLODED.

Laura Beeslee claims she 'felt like she was dying' when her hot water bottle burst while tucked underneath her jeans.

The 31-year-old, who lives in Diss, Norfolk, was suffering with menstrual cramps when she reached for her trusty hot water bottle to help alleviate the pain.

After filling the compress with freshly boiled water, the nursery manager placed it under the waistband of her jeans.

Within ten minutes, Laura felt a strange sensation down her legs and looked down to discover the device had ruptured and its entire contents had spilled all over her.

Screaming in agony, Laura raced to the bathroom to remove her jeans while her 37-year-old partner Adam Rayner began hosing her down.

"There was almost like a numbing sensation but I knew something was wrong.

"I looked down and could see water had gone down my legs and was all over the floor.

"I can't remember much else but apparently I screamed and ran to the bathroom trying to get my jeans off.

"My partner got me in the bath and hosed me down for half an hour.

"I was going in and out of consciousness because the pain was so excruciating.

"I felt like I was going to die. It was a pain like I'd never experienced in my life."

Adam drove Laura to their local hospital where she was then blue-lighted to the burns unit at Bloomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, due to the severity of her injuries.

There, Laura was placed under general anesthetic while medics popped the blisters on the worst affected areas of her thighs and stomach.

She spent the following three days in the intensive care unit before undergoing a skin graft to help rebuild her damaged skin.

Laura said: "They took quite a large amount of my skin from my left thigh and put it on my inner thighs and stomach.

"I wasn't able to walk for a few days – I had to use a zimmer frame.

"It's been four months now and I'm only now being able to walk relatively comfortably.

SAFETY TIPS FOR HOT WATER BOTTLES

Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Ensure your hot water bottle complies with British Safety Standard BS 1970:2021.

Check your hot water bottle for signs of wear, damage and leaks before each use.

Ensure that the stopper screws on and stays in place prior to filling.

Don’t use tap water to fill your hot water bottle as the impurities it contains can cause the rubber to perish more rapidly. Use boiled water that has been allowed to cool for a few minutes.

Do not fill your hot water bottle more than two thirds full.

Ensure excess air is expelled before replacing the stopper.

Always use a cover on your hot water bottle.

Do not sit, lie or put excess pressure on your hot water bottle when it is filled.

Do not allow direct contact with one area of the body for more than 20 minutes.

When not in use, your hot water bottle should be completely drained of water and the stopper removed.

Store away from direct sources of heat or sunlight.

Replace your hot water bottle every two years.

"They said it could take at least two years for my inner thighs to recover but there's likely to be scarring for the rest of my life.

"If we go out for the day, I have to sit down after walking for a little while. I have to moisturise my inner thighs up to six times a day otherwise they become quite tight and I can't move very well.

"It's still swollen now and I still can't wear jeans."

After researching the safety of hot water bottles, Laura found out the recommended amount of time to use one is two years – and was shocked to discover her own device was eight years past the advised use-by date.

She also found out hot water bottles contain a flower symbol at the top, which indicates the date of manufacture.

Laura said. "I didn't even know hot water bottles had an expiry date on them.

"I think we'd worked out it was about eight years out of date when I used it.

"It's quite scary because a lot of people have had the same hot water bottle since they were children.

"Please just check the expiry date, don't use boiling water, use water from the tap, only fill it halfway and be really vigilant.

"I'll never use a hot water bottle for life. If I'm cold now I'll just put an extra layer of clothing on.

"I've got to just live my life with my scars. They're a part of my life now.

"I feel lucky that I can cover up my scars. In a way I'm very fortunate it happened where it happened so I don't have to have it on show all the time."

Janine Evans, an advanced practitioner occupational therapist at the Morriston centre, said: “We’re not saying not to use hot water bottles, we're saying that if you must use them, to ensure to use them safely. It's all about minimising the risk of an accident happening.

DON'T USE BOILING WATER

“Ultimately, people are filling them with boiling water, which they shouldn't be doing. We get patients who sustain a boiling water scald to their hand, as when filling it they miss the bottle and pour the hot water over their hand.

“Also, people are not checking whether the rubber is perished before filling it. And then the hot water either leaks out slowly, or in some cases it explodes.
