Despite concerns about the recent surge in coronavirus cases in many parts of the country, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota is set to kick off later this week.
The annual rally, which runs from August 7 – 16, will include concerts from a number of well-known acts, including Molly Hatchet, The Guess Who, Smash Mouth, Night Ranger, Buckcherry, Lit, 38 Special, Quiet Riot, Reverend Horton Heat and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
A report from Ultimate Classic Rock noted organizers of the rally had to scramble to fill the lineup after previously announced performers, such as ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles and Willie Nelson, pulled out due to coronavirus concerns.
The Sturgis City Council voted to move forward with the rally in June, noting there will be significant changes to city-sponsored events with the intention of safeguarding the community and residents.
South Dakota has largely been spared during the coronavirus pandemic, with only 9,020 confirmed cases and 135 deaths, according to data from John Hopkins University.
However, the motorcycle rally is expected to draw as many as 250,000 people, with many likely coming from states that have seen a recent spike in coronavirus cases.
