Nicole Richie Talks At-Home Schooling During Coronavirus: ‘I Spent 10 Years Preaching No Screens’

Momma woes!

During a video chat on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Friday, Nicole Richie opened up about what parenting has been like while her kids are learning from home.

As you may be aware, the 38-year-old and her husband Joel Madden have two kids together, 12-year-old Harlow Winter Kate Madden and 10-year-old Sparrow James Midnight Madden. The House of Harlow 1960 designer explained to Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest about adapting to a new normal:

“They’re in home school so they’re doing their Zooms. It’s weird, I spent 10 years preaching no screens and now they’ve become kind of a lifeline over here. It’s literally the opposite of what I’ve been telling them. They’re doing school but they’re also doing their extracurricular activities and they’re communicating with their friends.”

She added:

“They really need that time. They need that time away — I’m sure a lot of moms feel like they need time away from their kids too, but it’s true, a lot of time kids need time away from us. They want to talk about other things, and I think they’re doing a really great job.”

Ultimately, as long as her kids are healthy and happy, that’s what matters most to this momma:

“Big picture, we are healthy and we’re home and that’s the most important thing you can do right now, stay home. We’re home.”

The Simple Life star added:

“We are doing okay. I think there’s so many waves of emotions. You don’t have to feel okay all the time, but the kids are adjusting really well. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a 10- and 12-year-old right now and only being around adults and having adults talk about one thing all day long.”

As she mentioned, her children normally don’t have much screen time at home, except for when their “Pop-Pop,” Lionel Richie, is on TV every week judging American Idol:

“They’re like, ‘Oh, Pop-Pop’s so crazy, he’s so silly.’ And he is. Here’s the thing about my dad: He’s the same person off camera as he is on camera. Any day I call him … he doesn’t say hello, he goes, ‘Showtime!’ And I’m like, ‘Dad it’s me.’”

Richie continued:

“And then he’s got the zingers and the one-liners and zoom zoom zoom. And I’m like, ‘Are you waiting for me to call? Do you have a list down? How do you have so many jokes just ready to go?’”
