Im A Celeb’s Sam Thompsons girlfriend sends heartfelt message after ADHD chat

IAC: Sam opens up about his ADHD diagnosis

Sam Thompson’s girlfriend Zara McDermott has sent out a heartfelt message to her partner after he opened up about getting diagnosed with ADHD on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last night.

The Strictly Come Dancing star took to Instagram to praise Sam for his bravery in view of her 1.8 million followers. Zara shared a clip of Sam speaking to fellow campmate Marvin Humes about his diagnosis.

The former Love Island star, who was clearly moved by her boyfriend’s candid discussion, captioned the clip: “A real inspiration to the ADHD community. So proud of you.”

In the clip, Marvin could be heard saying: “You know yesterday – and I know you’ve mentioned it a few times when we’ve been in camp but I actually never knew this – you said that you’ve got ADHD.

“How old were you when you were diagnosed with it?” Marvin asked, before Sam shocked him by replying: “Last year, mate.”

During the show, Sam also sat by the Creek along with This Morning presenter Josie Gibson as he opened up about the condition. “There are loads of people who are actually like of a certain age who get diagnosed way later,” he explained.

“When the low bits happen it goes low. But then the highs are really high. My girlfriend Zara is so steady and it’s so good for me. My timekeeping is terrible,” he admitted.

“I get quite selfish, not just with her [my girlfriend], with everyone, my mates or whatever. My listening to Zara… I’m just finding myself staring off at something completely different. You sort of feel like you’re a bit of a k*** sometimes.”

“But you would not be Sam without it,” Josie chimed in, as Marvin added: “I would just always say you’ve got loads of energy. Your energy is crazy bro and it’s what makes you great.”

“Weird no one spotted it beforehand at school,” Sam reflected. “But if you look at all of my report cards, every single one says the same, it says: ‘Likeable enough guy, but lacks focus’.

“It’s staring at you in the face. If I’d known as a kid, not much would have changed, but how you feel about yourself probably changes. I remember crying into my textbook because I couldn’t understand the words going into my head. You want to do good. You don’t want to be mischievous or anything like that.”

Speaking to Express.co.uk about his diagnosis, Sam said: “I wish I’d known earlier. Most people who do get diagnosed later in their life think, ‘God, how that would have affected me when I was a kid growing up or when I was at school or…

“You know, I could maybe not blame myself as much for some of the things that happened. I think even in day-to-day life as well,” he continued. “I find myself getting worked up about some things that other people who don’t have ADHD might not get [worked up over].

“I think ‘that’s such an odd thing to get worked up about’, but I do…” he confessed. “And then to be able to sit there and be like, ‘Hey, man, you’re okay. It’s a medical thing that’s going on in your brain.’ I think even just knowing that is some really awesome sort of…self-loving information, really.”

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
