Arnold schwarzenegger shares story of heart surgery that went wrong
Arnold Schwarzenegger has opened up about his near-death experience after undergoing open heart surgery for a third time, just before filming 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate.
The 76-year-old recalled how what was meant to be a “non-invasive procedure” turned into emergency surgery to save his life due to an error.
Surgeons were tasked with accessing his heart through the groin to replace a valve, however mistakenly poked through the heart wall, which led to internal bleeding.
When he woke up, the Terminator actor recalled doctors informing him that an unexpected turn had prompted the medical team to “open me up very quickly to save my life”.
“I was really freaking out,” he said of the experience, as he discussed how having a positive attitude helped him overcome the ordeal.

Arnold’s near-death experience happened just three months before he was due to film the latest Terminator of the franchise.
With this in mind, the actor said how his main focus was to build his strength back up and exercise, despite medical concerns.
In a YouTube video, he added: “The bottom line is, you cannot roll the clock back. It was a disaster. I was in the middle of a disaster.
“So now, how do I get out of it? You have to shift gears. Collect yourself, shift gears and say, ‘OK, what I need to do now is get out of this hospital.”
Arnold’s video, also shared on his Instagram, came with a montage of clips of him getting back on his feet with the help of a walking frame in hospital.

He added: “I looked like an idiot waddling around in the hallways, but the bottom line was I was getting going because the doctors said you have to exercise your lungs because if you get pneumonia you can die.”
Still wanting to stay motivated however, he did what he could to get in shape as he had to “move around, run around, lift things up and do the fight scenes” for the movie.
The actor reflected on his experience to show fans that it was never too late to pick yourself up again from a bad experience.
“There are times we are all starting from scratch – this was one of mine five years ago,” he captioned his post on Instagram.
Many of his 25 million followers shared their thoughts in the comment section.
